Michael Winterbottom’s (The Road to Guantamano, In This World) gripping adaptation of Marianne Pearl’s memoir of her late husband, Daniel Pearl, the journalist kidnapped and killed by militants in Karachi. Shot as a documentary-style drama, the film follows Marianne on her desperate search for her husband, before the release of the appalling video showing him being beheaded.
At its centre is an outstanding performance by an almost unrecognisable Angelina Jolie, a million miles from the glossy magazine cover star we have seen of late. It’s easy to forget that she already has an Oscar for Girl Interrupted and could well be on her way to a second for her dignified and moving portrayal of a woman coming to terms with the devastating truth about her husband’s disappearance.
